Travel Special: Cheap Flights from Down Under

South Africa’s national carrier, SAA, has announced special airfares from major cities down under - but you have to book soon. Tickets range from AU$1450 ex Adelaide to AU$1650 ex Sydney.

As a bonus, you’ll get a free return flight to Durban, Cape Town or the Nelson Mandela Metropole (NMMM, a.k.a Port Elizabeth). Note that these are all good surfing cities - and locally, flights to them ain’t cheap, so that’s quite a deal.

Once here, you can adopt one of our several national greetings, which range from “Sawubona” (saw-woo-BOH-nah - Zulu), to “Howzit Bru” (HOW-zit BROO - Soufeffrikan Inglish). The latter’s probably more appropriate for an Aussie.

For more information, give your travel agent a call, or visit the SAA homepage.

Thanks for the info on getting to SA. I have a question on getting around once I’m there. I am hoping to move to Stellenbosch in 2007, and I plan to do a lot of international travel once I’m there. I am in a state of near panic upon seeing the prices on SAA to get anywhere! 2 international trips a year for my wife and I will bankrupt us. Do you have any bargain travel airfare resource recommendations out of South Africa? I am hoping to travel to Egypt, Namibia, India, and Russia while I’m based in Stellenbosch.

Paul, fortunately you aren’t limited to SAA in your choice of carriers. To get to Egypt, for instance, you might want to have a look at EgyptAir (which is usually pretty cheap); Air Namibia for Namibia, and so on. For budget airfares, I’ve had the most luck with Flight Centre:

For an idea of how many carriers service SA, check out SA Blog’s Johannesburg Airport post:

Enjoy Stellenbosch! -Ed.
