Restaurant Review: Passage to India, Tableview.

Having lived for over ten years in England, I have developed what is more than a penchant for Indian Cuisine. After all the most popular dish in England is no longer fish and chips, rather Chicken Tikka Masala. Whether it be the ingredients or the method, I have found it hard to locate an Indian restaurant in South Africa that can emulate the flavour of the curry houses in the UK. (UK curry is quite different in fact from authentic Indian cuisine which is generally dryer and less hot)

A new restaurant has opened up in Tableview (my area) and serves fabulous authentic UK Indian food and has a proper charcoal tandoor to make Naan bread the way Mata jee used to make. They also used it to make the incredible tandoori chicken that I ordered. Possibly the best I have had. Also recommended are the Rogan Josh, which is out of this world and also the Gulab Jamun for dessert. Gulab’s are sort of like a Doughnut dipped in a rosewater Syrup. Far more sophisticated than icing and sprinkles. Wash it down with a Cobra beer and you could be in Kashmir or Brick Lane.

They are very reasonably priced and offer a 15% discount for takeaways. A main course runs between R30-R55 ($4-$7)

Address: Shop 2 Carnaby Centre Marine Circle, Bloubergstrand, Cape Town

Tel: +27 21 557 5524

They also have a sister restaurant at the V&A Waterfront called “Jewel of India” which I will be checking out in the future.

I couldn’t agree more, I have tried countless Indian Restaurants around SA and the food at ‘Passage to India’ is easily the best I have tried since emigrating from England five years ago. The Jewel of India in the Waterfront is also very good and comes a close second. Great to have an excellent Indian option right here in Table View, long live the onion bhaji!

Also an Expat of 17 years & finally we have a decent Curry House in Cape Town. Food could be a little hotter in the chilli sense imho!
A good tip:
When ordering a takeaway tell them what time you want it then have a few bevvys at the Royal Oak pub opposite & they will deliver it at the requested time. Recommended..
