Today, Your Correspondent developed a new addiction: reading the comments of those who’ve joined budget airline kulula.com’s petition to introduce daylight savings in South Africa.
As a publicity stunt, the drive is fairly creative; but as a window on the world of local SA life, it’s a downright indictment. What a boring lot we are! How would we spend our extra hour of daylight? Watering the plants, playing with the kids, and walking the dog. It’s so prosaic it strikes terror in the heart.
You can read petitioners’ comments and get to know the distrubingly dull SA psyche here.
By the way, our sunlight-greedy western neighbor, Namibia, effects daylight savings each summer, so it’s always possible to haul kids, pets and skin that’s not deep-fried enough there for extra rays.
