Spotted! The Nelson Mandela Bridge, in the heart of the Johannesburg CBD, connecting its Braamfontein and Newtown sections.

Where it is? Just south of Smit Street | Map

What is it? It’s an symbol of South Africa’s new democracy, and a handy conduit from Joburg’s northern suburbs to the urban renewal experiment that is Newtown.

Why would I ever go there? To cross over to Newtown’s MuseuMAfrikA, Market Theatre, and Gramadoelas restaurant.

What’s nearby? Wits University, at the bridge’s upper end, and at its lower, apart from Newtown, the vasty deeps of downtown Joburg.
