Gateway: Durban’s theatre of shopping

To carry on with the shopping theme, Durban is home to one of the biggest shopping retail outlets in Africa. With more than 280 stores and a wide variety of restaurants, entertainment and recreational activities this is not just any shopping centre! Situated in the ever-expanding Umhlanga Ridge New Town Centre about 20 minutes outside Durban, there is something for everyone at Gateway.

On the recreational front, Gateway is most famous for it’s Wavehouse, where the novice and experienced can hit the waves. Gateway also houses The Rock (the World’s Highest Indoor Climbing Wall), a Skate Park designed by Tony Hawk himself and the Nissan 4×4 Track! Entertainment is plentiful, with Durban’s only IMAX theatre, Cinema Nouveau and The Barnyard Theatre. The kiddies (and many adults) will get lost in Fantasy Forest, which offers Tenpin bowling, mini golf, go carts, a foofie (Zip Line) slide and bumper cars to name a few.

There is something for every palate at Gateway, from coffee shops to Newscafe, from Cape Town Fish Market to Spur. The hotels and buildings surrounding the shopping centre are home to many exclusive and up market restaurants. As for the stores, you won’t leave Gateway empty handed… anything and everything can be purchased under one large roof!
