If you explore Cape Town’s city bowl on foot, you’re bound to bump into the Gardens Centre eventually. Situated on the verge of the city center, its tall, grey, ugly tower - which contains holiday flats - is difficult to miss. (The best view of the city, architecturally-speaking, is from within.)
Despite its ungainly exterior, the mall is a favorite with Capetonians, because of its concentrated blend of the essential (Clicks, Pick ‘n Pay, Woolworths, the major banks), the luxurious (designer shoes, clothing and knick-knacks, gourmet deli, etc.) and the caffeinated (more coffee houses than you can shake a stick at).
The walk to the mall from the heart of the city (Long Street - map - or Kloof Street - map), though seemingly short, is longer than you think. It’s always better to cadge a ride, buy the driver a cuppa while you shop, and get whisked back to your abode, bags of goodies (or groceries, most likely) in tow.
