The best cup of coffee in South Africa - excluding the hand-brewed miracle served up in Your Correspondent’s kitchen by his Lovely Assistant most afternoons - is to be found at the Seattle Coffee Company chain of cafes.
While I’m not normally too enthusiastic about any kind of chain store, Seattle is different. The coffee’s always fresh, rich and strong; during my 10-season-long cafe-hopping soap opera here, I’ve never tasted another cup to top it. Bizarrely, Seattle doesn’t have a website, so I can’t refer you on to further propaganda.
Today I’ve discovered two two further reasons to pop into Seattle for a soothing cuppa: their names are “Ginger Cookie” and “Choc Nut Brownie”. You’ll find these confectionary treasures situated among the other snacks near the till. Not only are they very tasty, but they’re the products of the Khayelitsha Cookie Company, a non-profit organisation creating jobs in Cape Town’s townships.
Note that the cookies carry Seattle’s own branding, so you have to look carefully to make sure you’re choosing the right treat. (Let the picture above be your guide!)
