top.gifWell if anyone has seen, heard or better yet been to a burningman festival, this piece of news should be very exciting.

Following very closely in the footsteps of our crusty US counterparts, South Africa is getting it’s own burning man extravaganza together. Afrikaburns

africaburns.jpgFor those that have not heard, burningman is an annual week long event celebrating radical self-expression, and radical self-reliance. It takes its name from the ritual burning a large wooden sculpture of a man on the sixth day.

At a burnigman event, nothing is bought or sold, but instead “gifted” creating an alternate economy of giving and sharing freely. Motorized transport is banned within the confines of the event and a “leave no trace” policy is strictly upheld.

Below are the guidelines for partcipation for Afrikaburns:

  • Devise your own form of participation…
  • Create an art installation
  • Construct a theme camp with your mates…
  • Offer a service
  • Dress up your body
  • Paint your body
  • Put on a performance or build a stage…
  • Create an art car
  • Volunteer your time
  • Design an event…
  • Facilitate a workshop…
  • Share your culinary expertise…
  • Bring gifts, any gifts to give to others…
  • Donate your unwanted items to the event…
