Situated close to downtown Johannesburg, just southwest of the Central Business District, the FNB Soccer Cit Stadium will host the FIFA 2010 World Cup opening ceremony, first match and final game as well as five first round matches, one second round match and one quarter final.
The design of the upgraded stadium has been inspired by styles of African pottery, and is a unique landmark on the Johannesburg landscape, remembered as much for great moments in the national game as much for great moments of social and political significance.
The venue is situated close to Soweto – home to the country’s most popular teams, the Kaiser Chiefs and Orlando Pirates – but will also be accessible from most parts of the city. It is positioned at the junction of the M70 and M5 highways and close to the Nasrec stops on the Johannesburg Metro Railway Line.
