Going on Safari, is an unforgettable experience and one that should not be missed, if you are heading to sub-Saharan Africa.
Game parks are currently the biggest tourist attraction to South Africa, and for good reason. We have lots! and they are the most accessible in Africa.
South Africa has 20 national parks and numerous private reserves, where you can see game in a wide variety of settings.
There are safari options to suit any budget, from backpacking in and around the world famous Kruger Park (which is half the size of Portugal!), to lapping up obscene luxury in Singita, Leopard Hills or Mala mala amongst many, many others.
Every region of South Africa, has opportunities for game viewing, but generally the further South you go the less “African” the experience. Even Cape Town, now has a few private reserves for viewing large game, and driving up the R27 you can sometimes see giraffes stooping down to munch bushes….
Plans are also afoot to extend the Wildlife preserve along the west Coast and introduce all manner of game. (This is very near my house) If this happens, it will complete Cape Towns portfolio of attractions and the rest of he country may as well close down..just kidding. Nothing compares to the searing heat and deafening silence of Mpumalanga for that feeling of complete isolation and impending predation
Unfortunately for travellers, the best game viewing in the country is about as far from Cape Town as you can get, so one or the other often gets left out on a short trip.
Enter the garden route: Luckily we have a strip of outstanding natural beauty along the East coast, which tourist can amble along (time permitting) and get a taste for the increasing “Authenticity” going North. You can either self drive, take the train or bus. The Baz bus is a well known and popular method of getting up country via the Garden Route. You can get off and on along the route and take your time in the places you fancy.
You can of course Fly in, to the newly named Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (previously Nelspruit International), or many of the other landing strips hosted by private lodges. This will save you time at the expense of seeing the country change slowly around you.
If your plan is to see a number of parks, or perhaps you are travelling with a family, a good option is to go for the Wild Card, this card could save you some serious cash if your trip is centred around parks and game viewing.
