Global Breakthrough South Africa: Sir Norman Jay!!

I would hate to compare Cape Town with Ibiza, mainly because I have never been there, but also I think I have a pretty good idea what it’s like. Red sweaty yobs on ecstasy at 200bpm. Anyhoo some people are touting Cape Town as the next Ibiza, namely the “industry experts” at DJ magazine, UK (The red sweaty ones). Cape Town has so much more than Ibiza, history, heritage, culture and, many more varied/scenic places to throw up.

Ibiza or not, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw that Sir Norman Jay was to be playing at Caprice in Camps Bay!! Jay kicks ass. The last time I heard him live was at Bondi beach pavilion 12 years ago, before vinyl was even invented.

His appearance is part of a tour called Global Breakthrough, which by the looks of it is an extremely ambitious project: With unbelievable sounding venues like “The Predator tank” at the V@A Aquarium! and a Wine Cellar at the Bloemendal Estate. Cynic that I am, something tells me this is too good to be true… My hunches are itching further at the fact that

WITW Neighbour goods market - Woodstock, Cape Town.

Cape Town is dotted with markets. Most with curios, antiques, clothing and the obligatory “yellow food” array.

For something a little different, WITW (What If The World), have initiated an organic food, crafts and design market in what was the old biscuit factory in Woodstock.

One can find incredible artisinal breads and locally produced premium olives, amongst all sorts of wonderfull fresh fruits and vegetables. More than 50 stands of produce in all. It is only open on Saturdays and has a huge following of Jamie Oliver and “knit your own yoghurt” types on Vespa’s and unicycles.

Amsterdam Guest House Remains in the Pink of Health

A B&B that caters to the gay travel market in Cape Town’s leafy suburb of Oranjezicht has been allowed to keep its “men only” status.

This after a challenge to the Amsterdam Guest House’s exclusionary accommodation policy was brought before South Africa’s Commission for Gender Equality, by - in a move that engenders new degrees of befuddlement in matters of political correctness - an organization purporting to represent gay interests, and going by the name of the GLA, or the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Party.

Decorex and design for living Exhibitions: Part deus, the revenge.

So as mentioned in my earlier post, we decided to do BOTH shows in one day, luckily Decorex closed at 5 or we would of had to toss the spare wheel to transport all the pamphlets.

Decorex ‘07 has now finished, having run from the 26th-29th April, so I am going to tell you about it, but you can’t go.

This was the first time I have been to this show and I must say I was very impressed. Not just with the stands and the exhibitors, but with the convention centre itself. Wow, the CTICC (Cape Town International Convention Centre) is a world class structure, for a moment I thought I was in lost in Europe. My neighbour Simon, was one of the architects involved in the project, so we stood around in his part, for a while. Very nice, well done Simon.

MCQP: Mother City Queer Project Pictures, The straight and harrowing.

The evening started with us debating whether or not we were going to go at all, but try and persuade a hair and makeup artist not to go to a costume ball and you’ll know how the negotiations went. The next stage was deciding what to go as.

First in Africa: Gay marriage legalized.

As of yesterday Thursday 30th November, South Africa became the first country in Africa to offer the legal right of marriage to same sex couples. The legislation was approved in Thabo Mbeki’s absence, by deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.

The talk radio stations are abuzz with heated debate on the subject. The black majority, hold mainly conservative views about homosexuality as too, do the relevant faith groups. However, as it played out, our constitution which is one of the most liberal in the world (quite a recent thing), was found to be at odds with the definition of marriage act of 1961.

Snippet
After a long perusal of the menu, my Lovely Assistant decided to risk an entire afternoon’s happiness on the wild mushroom risotto, while I was far more conservative with my basil, hummus, sundried tomato and avocado ciabatta (toasted).
