The Lodge is deeply supportive of local Craft Routes, which guests can follow to discover a plethora of multi-talented Shangaan and Venda traditional artists. There’s also the community-linked Venda Legends Trail, which visits the mystical Phidiphidi Falls, and the Baobab Meander, which takes guests to the largest baobab tree in the country (girth: 43 meters!).

Malaria in South Africa: Introduction and Advice

Disclaimer: this post is not meant to replace medical advice from a medical doctor. If you’re planning a trip to Africa, please consult with your medical doctor on malaria and other diseases.

Malaria Risk Map
Malaria Risk Map

The first thing to know about malaria in South Africa is that it’s prevalant only in the country’s three northeasternmost provinces - KwaZulu Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo - and only in their outermost regions. See the map (provided by malaria.org.za) for SA malaria risk areas.

You do not need to take precautions against malaria for trips to SA that are limited to Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, or any of the country’s six malaria-free provinces: North West, Northern Cape, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng.

(Note that parts of the North West and Northern Cape provinces, in certain areas along the borders with Botswana and Namibia - including the Kalahari desert - sometimes require seasonal malaria precautions. Check in advance with your local contact.)

You do need to take precautions if you plan to enter a malaria-prevalant zone, including the Kruger National Park, during any part of your trip here.

Risk of malaria infection in prevalent areas is highest between October and May.Kruger National Park malaria information hotline: +27 (0) 82 234 1800.

Oppikoppi Easter Festival

Waking up at 9 am was already considered late for the hardcore beer-drinkers at the Oppikoppi Easter Festival. We walked from our tents to the outdoor bathrooms to brush our teeth as a group of people returned from playing a round of beer golf and began their morning braai of sausages and eggs. “Four!” shouted a drunk man as he swung his golf club at the beer can he had just drained.

Drinking made up just a fraction of the festivities during the weekend festival, where bands - mostly from South Africa - came together for three days to play rock and punk against the backdrop of the hills in Northam, Limpopo Province.

Hot Air Balloon Safaris in the Magaliesberg

Though Your Correspondent has never had the pleasure, he can’t imagine anything more spectacular than a hot-air balloon ride over a game reserve. This is precisely what Bill Harrop offers, with his Magaliesberg Balloon Safaris, breezing over the world’s oldest mountain range (2 billion years and counting, or so the tourist literature purports) since 1981.

Harrop offers two main “safaris”, one which follows the Magalies River Valley in North West Province, and one which floats above Mabula Private Game Reserve in Limpopo Province. Mabula boasts a good-sized rhinocerous population, among other major African fauna, and the sheer …
