On a Magaliesberg Meanderabout? Stay at the Budmarsh Lodge

If you’re planning to visit Joburg, and find yourself with a free night or two, then this weekend’s edition of The Star newspaper has a tip for you: head over to the Magaliesberg, and take a Magaliesberg Meander to the 5-star Budmarsh Lodge. I’ve never seen the lodge myself, but it got quite a good review (particularly in the kitchen department). Have a look:

Baz Blog: From Sea and Surf Through the Mountains to the City of Gold

SA Blog is touring South Africa on the Baz Bus, following the adventures of intrepid Baz Blogger Kathy - a.k.a. “Trekker”.

“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood…” From Durban (the end of Leg Two on the Baz Bus route), you have a choice of two roads to follow for Leg Three: you can continue up the coast to Swaziland, or head inland through the Drakensberg Mountains and straight to Johannesburg, the city of gold.

I chose the latter of the two, planning to continue on towards Swaziland after Joburg.

Here we go again, then - waking up at the crack of dawn to hop on the Baz Bus and head into the mountains.

Side Note: Leaving Durban, be sure to check your time for the Baz Bus pick-up! If you are heading north to Joburg, pick-up is 7h30 a.m., and if to Swaziland, it’s 6.30am. I know from experience what it is like to get the times mixed up, luckily for me it meant an extra hour on the beach, rather than a rush to get out of bed.

This is Cool: South Africa Fire Map

If you’ve been to Joburg, you’ll know this to be true: South Africa burns. Many small, random fires dot the landscape, particularly on the highveld (which is, roughly, Gauteng Province and its immediate surrounds), and the country chokes from the smoke of several large, devastating conflagrations each year. Have a look, for instance, at SA Logue’s coverage of the great Table Mountain Fire this January.

Gauties Keep Pace with Aussies, Brits, Dutchmen, Rhinelanders, Yanks

News in from the tourism bodies of the various provinces is that local South Africans have accounted for almost as much new travel business as international visitors this summer, if not actually more.

South Africans didn’t need to be told this. It’s been clear from the start that this has been a bumper year for the Gauties.

Gauties - pronounced HOW-teez, with the “H” like the “ch” in the Scottish “loch” - are people from Gauteng (HOW-teng) Province, and essentially deserve to comprise their own nationality. It’s not difficult to identify a Gautie: the men’s hair is shorter and their eyes are …
