Stunning Snow Pics from Amohela ho Spitskop

Art Vaarks Should Head to Clarens

Call Clarens the Santa Fe of the Free State. Not because of its size - it’s a tiny village of just 400 souls - but because of its heart, which beats art, art, art. Clarens is home to a thriving artists’ colony, which has its own Canyon Road-style Artist Amble, allowing visitors to pop in and out of the twenty-odd working studios on the route.

Vintage Tractor Fair in the Free State! 2,3,4 March 2006

Vintage tractors enjoy widespread, if highly camouflaged support in South Africa - which isn’t to say that they never get their moment in the sun. Once or twice a year, the creaky hinges of old farm shed doors ring out across the land, followed by the spluttering of trusty tractor engines. A parade is held, much admiration is expressed, and then the rag-tag army is sent back to its retirement quarters. Old tractors never die, they just become homes for spiders.

SA’s Sunday Times Takes You Halfway to Nowhere

If you are of the road-tripping ilk, then the Sunday Times has an idea for you: head out on the N1, into the cold, desolate Karoo, and spend a night or two on a farm in - well, where, exactly? The writer doesn’t mention the name of her destination until the last sentence of her piece.

Baz Blog: From Sea and Surf Through the Mountains to the City of Gold

SA Blog is touring South Africa on the Baz Bus, following the adventures of intrepid Baz Blogger Kathy - a.k.a. “Trekker”.
Sani Pass, Lesotho

“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood…” From Durban (the end of Leg Two on the Baz Bus route), you have a choice of two roads to follow for Leg Three: you can continue up the coast to Swaziland, or head inland through the Drakensberg Mountains and straight to Johannesburg, the city of gold.

I chose the latter of the two, planning to continue on towards Swaziland after Joburg.

Here we go again, then - waking up at the crack of dawn to hop on the Baz Bus and head into the mountains.

See Baz Bus route map | Book Baz Bus ticket
Side Note: Leaving Durban, be sure to check your time for the Baz Bus pick-up! If you are heading north to Joburg, pick-up is 7h30 a.m., and if to Swaziland, it’s 6.30am. I know from experience what it is like to get the times mixed up, luckily for me it meant an extra hour on the beach, rather than a rush to get out of bed.

Vital information:
Airport code: BFNStreet Map: Click here (then zoom out)Floor plan: None available, nor neededGeneral info: +27 (0) 51 407 2240Flight info via telephone: +27 (0) 86 727 7888Flight info via SMS/text: Send flight number to 35007.Hired/Rented cars: Inside the airport (I think).Wifi? NoFormer & alternate names: JBM Herzog, Lughawe (Afrikaans for “Airport”).Free carts? YesPorters? Available Porter tip? R5 per bag.Curbside drop-off/pick-up allowed? YesParking? No info available, tell me different, or remind me to check againDisabled-friendly? Moderately

Bloemfontein Airport is traditionally a home-away-from-home for intrepid business travellers with affairs in the Free State - as evidenced by the fact that only the country’s most expensive carrier, SAA, flies there. If you’re not such a traveller, but find yourself en route to Bloem anyway, fear not. The airport’s as simple as it seems (unlike most other simple-seeming things).
