Skiing in South Africa

For a truly unique winter travel experience in Africa, it’s going to be tough to top a ski getaway in the Drakensberg mountains.

Granted, for those who are used to skiing in, say, the Alps or Rockies, the charms of SA’s downhill and snowboarding playgrounds may have less potency than for those who’ve never seen snow. On the other hand, if you’re …

Not Quite Kili - SA’s Highest Peak

(An SA Blog Beta post from Your Correspondent)

Court’s tales of her Kilimanjaro ascent put me in a mind to investigate how high one can walk uphill in SA. Not surprisingly, the answer lies in the province of KwaZulu Natal. Its mountainous border with Lesotho holds many climbing challenges (and is spectacularly beautiful) - the highest of which, at 3446 meters, is Mafadi peak.

That’s only about 2500 meters or so short of Kili - pretty close, when you consider that Kili’s about 3000 meters short of Everest.

Life in Lesotho

You can hear the wind blowing through the red, yellow and green-tinted grass. That is how quiet and serene the little village of Mafika-Lisiu in Lesotho is, just over the border of South Africa in the Northern Drakensberg mountains.

Baz Blog: From Sea and Surf Through the Mountains to the City of Gold

SA Blog is touring South Africa on the Baz Bus, following the adventures of intrepid Baz Blogger Kathy - a.k.a. “Trekker”.

“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood…” From Durban (the end of Leg Two on the Baz Bus route), you have a choice of two roads to follow for Leg Three: you can continue up the coast to Swaziland, or head inland through the Drakensberg Mountains and straight to Johannesburg, the city of gold.

I chose the latter of the two, planning to continue on towards Swaziland after Joburg.

Here we go again, then - waking up at the crack of dawn to hop on the Baz Bus and head into the mountains.

See Baz Bus route map | Book Baz Bus ticket
Side Note: Leaving Durban, be sure to check your time for the Baz Bus pick-up! If you are heading north to Joburg, pick-up is 7h30 a.m., and if to Swaziland, it’s 6.30am. I know from experience what it is like to get the times mixed up, luckily for me it meant an extra hour on the beach, rather than a rush to get out of bed.
