South Africa Beer & More Non-Vinous Booze!

The Brew Route: Durbans answer to the wine route?

beer2.jpg

The Zulu Kingdom now offers visitors a chance to experience the Brew Route, similar in many ways to the wine routes of the Western Cape.

The Route consists of 8 breweries, which range from SABMiller (second largest brewer in the world) to the family run Farmers Brauhaus in Hattingspruit, Dundee.

The route takes tourists through a large part of the province and is impossible to complete in one day, but there is excellent accommodation available throughout the route, especially in the Midlands.

Tulbagh Tavern: Hidden little pub.

Cape Town, always manages to surprise me. Yesterday, I was doing some running around and found this tiny pub in Tulbagh square. Cape Town does not have a traditional pub culture like in England, so every now and again one longs for the dank, smoky recesses of a “local” to sip a beer and eat soggy fish and chips.

The Tulbagh tavern is such a place and dare I say the most authentic English pub in Cape Town. It has been in this location over 35 years, and boy does it show. Bald velveteen upholstery, huge mock Tudor wooden beams …

It’s Time to Reveal What’s in SA Logue’s Fridge

Beer! Tafel Lager, that is, because no domestic SAB beer - horribly nasty brews like Castle Lager, Black Label, Amstel, Hansa and so on - will e’er pass my lips. (Note: I will drink a few of SAB’s international beers, such as Pilsner Urquell, and will also sip Amstel that’s brewed in Holland. Glad we sorted that out.)

Cape Town Nightlife: Madame Zingara’s Theatre of dreams.

In a rather unusual location below the highway in the foreshore, is a antique tent housing the relocated and renamed Madame Zingara’s Tent/Theatre of Dreams.

The original restaurant in Bree Street burnt down in Sept ‘06, and the insurance payout wasn’t enough to reopen so negotiations then started with the Klessen family Belgium who own a rather rare 1920’s dinner and dance hall tent. “Constructed of wood, mirrors, canvas, leaded glass and detailed in velvet and brocade” The family have toured with this tent for four generations.

Apparently the tent is on loan for only a few short months, so make the …

Paulaner Brauhaus: V&A Waterfront

Whenever I am at the Waterfront, I try and make a little visit to the Paulaner Brewery on the Clocktower side. (Over the raising bridge). It’s a large venue, probably seating around 500, and is right next to the platform to catch the ferry to Robben Island.

I like a beer on a hot day and nothing compares to a Hefe Weisbier served in a ruddy fish tank. Weissbier (wheat beer) apart from being made from wheat is cloudy and sweeter than lager. In the heat is goes down like a little fat boy at a cannibal convention and leaves you feeling like a jolly round German.

Beer Tours Here!

If you’re looking for a beery good time in Cape Town, then the Newlands brewery of SAB Miller is where you want to be. It has a brewing capacity of 4.5 million hectaliters - enough to get an entire nation drunk, much less the groups of 10 - 25 that are escorted around the premises at regular intervals each day.

Get Mosquitos to Bug Someone Else with Beer

Alert! According to medical professionals whom Your Correspondent has spoken to on the matter, drinking beer is a good way to ward off mosquitos. Miraculous news!

Castle Lager is a Ballot Spoiler

With the news last week that America’s Budweiser will be the only beer sold in the stands during the 2010 World Cup, SA Blog launched an important poll: which beer is worse, Budweiser (Anheuser-Busch) or Miller (South African Breweries)?

Cast your vote now at ao1sa-pisspoorbeer@yahoo.com.

But, in considering this question, Your Correspondent didn’t reckon on the discontent of beer-drinknig South Africans - most of whom have never had the displeasure of slugging down either of the aforesaid brews - and who have now demanded that their own beery grievances be heard.

A certain “LA” from Cape Town has …
