Violent crime in Cape Town: Flash Mob

When the pressures of crime, government and equal opportunity get you down, it is comforting to know you can go and smack someone with a pillow.

This flash mob event was filmed at the Victoria Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town. I expected to see the riot squad and special forces arrive to smack seven flavours of spit out of them, but it went down without hitch or reprimand it seems.

For a list of Cape Town Flash mob events you can see their Facebook group here. And you …

The Lion King comes home.

Finally after 10 years The Lion King is making its first appearance in Africa at the newly built “Teatro” at the Montecasino in Johannesburg

I am not a huge fan of Broadway musicale’s mainly because of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Sarah Brightman, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching the The Lion King in London when it first opened. It is a real spectacle of a production, which did an impressive job of bringing the savannah to the west end and it made me pretty homesick at the time.

The first show is schedule for tonight 06/07/07 and so I have no review …

Maynardville: Romeo and Juliet, best way to ruin a good picnic!

The annual Shakespeare production at Maynardville is a traditional calendar highlight in Cape Town. An open air setting, in a park, by a lake, with a picnic, at sunset…Sounds lovely no?

Not if Director Fred Abrahamse has anything to do with it! Managing to pervert a tale of sweetness and innocence into a lewd string of sexual innuendo, locate the least lovable and capable actors in the fold (universe) to play the leading roles and dress them up as drag queens. Nice work buddy!

The Brew Route: Durbans answer to the wine route?

beer2.jpg

The Zulu Kingdom now offers visitors a chance to experience the Brew Route, similar in many ways to the wine routes of the Western Cape.

The Route consists of 8 breweries, which range from SABMiller (second largest brewer in the world) to the family run Farmers Brauhaus in Hattingspruit, Dundee.

The route takes tourists through a large part of the province and is impossible to complete in one day, but there is excellent accommodation available throughout the route, especially in the Midlands.

Gun’s and Roses coming to South Africa

It will be a real welcome to the jungle (sorry) for the leather clad rockers. Axl and his band of miscreants will be playing in both Johannesburg and Cape Town for the first time ever on April 27th and May 1st respectively.

Although the way he dances upsets me a little, I do like a lot of their music and will probably go to the concert if he invites me. Also on the bill are Hoobastankand Evanescence, both have quite a following here so I think it will be a rollicking success.

Said Rose (who turned 45 yesterday): …

KuduClub.com: Bad South African TV from anywhere in the world!

Call me tasteful, but South African soap operas like “Egoli”, “Binnelanders” or all time favorite “Orkney Snork nie” have never held a place in my heart.

Carte Blanche would have to get my vote as the best program to come out of South Africa, but if your ex-pat, homesick heart is pining for some truly homegrown TV; Villarosa, Begeertes and all that good stuff is available via www.kuduclub.com . Logon and you can pick up horrendous SA programming anywhere in the world via the internet. They are running a special at the moment of 4 months

Bart Simpson Beams Down to Cape Town

The problem is, someone (something?) aboard the alien ship mis-programmed the transporter settings while simultaneously beaming up a few African curios from the street vendors below, resulting in this messy molecular melange:
