It wasn’t pretty, but Africa’s surrogate team beat what can only be described as Brazil’s surrogate team last night, in a ninety-minute affair marked by defensive drudgery from France and fruitless attacking from Portugal.

This is slightly off-topic in a travel guide, but it’s also important, in a world of unsavory rumor, that we in South Africa demonstrate our deep levels of engagement with the beautiful game at all times.
During yesterday’s epic semifinal, the subject of a hand-picked first eleven came up, and, after some debate - lubricated by wine, beer, cognac and Doritos - the following “dream team” was picked, to play in a 1-3-5-2, taking cognizance of the fact that the 2006 World Cup has rewarded attacking footbal.

You read it here on SouthAfricaLogue first! The team we picked on behalf of Africa, a gloriously rejuvinated France, has ousted perennial favorites and Cup-holders Brazil in a one-goal thriller, and are going through to the World Cup semifinals, where they will meet Portugal and their dangerously clever coach, the always-on-the-money Phil Scolari. (Portugal, thankfully, ousted a wholly inadequate England after penalties in the day’s early match.)
Allez les bleus! - or, as a France supporter’s sign had it in the Frankfurt stadium this evening, Allez les vieux!

It’s over for Africa at the World Cup, after Ghana gave it their Round of 16 best with a splendid display of flair-filled football, but were gutted by Brazil anyway.
Though the continent licks its wounds, it hasn’t forgotten its love for the beautiful game, and will most certainly be up for more soccer action come Friday.
But we need a new team to support - vicarious thrills are better than none, after all. SA Logue considers the options:

Phil Scolari, coach of Portugal, doesn’t look particularly formidable, even when his portly figure is projected in near-life size proportions on the 60-inchers, but he casts a long shadow over the games he supervises, plotting what has seemed at times like an inexorable march toward a first world championship for the Portuguese (and a second one for himself).

The World Cup casts a long shadow over all the rest of sport - including yesterday’s Durban July, which SA Logue confesses to having forgot. Sorry, Durban. C’etait la faut des onze vieux hommes de la France.
The Durban July is the country’s premier horse race, more or less - though the folks over at Cape Town’s J&B Met might have a word to say about that - and was won by the favorite, a certain Eye of the Tiger, amidst much wearing of hats-and-not-much-else.

Africa’s surrogate team, France, clashes with World Cup holders Brazil this evening, in what might just turn out to be the match of the tournament (so far).
As Daryl points out over at WorldCupBlog, quarterfinals are the best, because the teams are quality but the stakes aren’t as gruesomely high as in the semis.
