First off the bat, it’s alphabetical neighbors Togo and Switzerland vying for a few shreds of honor - neither has won a game yet, but each theoretically still has a chance of making their group’s top two. The late game features Mediterranean neighbors Tunisia and Spain; if Tunisia can come away with a draw against the formidable Spaniards, they have a good chance of reaching the second round.
Meanwhile, the Mini-Group of Death has come into its own, as World Cup uber-blogger Bob has pointed out on today’s front …
Now that Africa’s best team - the Ivory Coast - is out of the tournament (their axing was a Group of Death special), all we have left is hope of some luck for the continent’s other contenders. Send good vibes Ghana’s way as they taking on the daunting Czech Republic!

Ivory Coast clash with the Netherlands in today’s second group match - another Group of Death special - while, in the late game, Angola face the daunting prospect of a bit o’ bullfighting with Mexico. OlĂ©!
The original title of this post was - Look for Africa’s First World Cup Win Today. Funny thing, English grammar. Once you’ve stroked your chin a few times, in consideration of what might be awry with your original wording, an alternative practically suggests itself!
Tunisia take on Saudi Arabia in today’s second World Cup match - this after all four of Africa’s previous attempts at winning on football’s greatest stage have gone a-begging.
Togo stretched South Korea yesterday, taking a 1-nil lead into halftime, courtesy a stunner from Mohammed Kader. But they lost their captain in the second half, Korea swarmed, and the result was a 2-1 win for the favorites. Rats.
Surprising that it should be Togo, of all teams, to have provided some hope for the continent. (WorldCupBlog editor Bob’s pre-match prediction …
The World Cup’s Mini-Group of Death gets going today, with all four teams in action - including African hope Ghana, who have a tough match against Italy. (Hey, it’s not called the Mini-Group of Death for nothing; on the other hand, it’s not the real Group of Death, either.)
The match kicks off at 9 p.m. CEST - follow it LIVE on WorldCupBlog.org.
Ghana have beaten the Czech Republic 2-nil, to give the African continent its first victory in the 2006 World Cup! The brilliant Black Stars - who are, by the way, responsible for South Africa’s absence from the tournament, having topped SA’s qualifying group last year - simply outclassed the previously-magesterial Czech side, and produced a stunning upset in the process.
If Ghana can beat the USA in their match next Thursday, they’ll likely make it through to the second round. Imagine the party that’s on in Accra tonight!

News Bar, Long Street
This is a small-but-intimate joint at the lower end of Long Street, which you can practically have all to yourself. Belly up to the bar for a close-up view of the action, or head to the glassed-in smokers’ section for a decent-sized plasma screen.
Tunisia drew 2-2 with Saudia Arabia in Africa’s last match of the opening raft of World Cup games yesterday. The Eagles of Carthage had a 1-nil lead during most of the game, but then blew it, almost lost, and scraped dramatically back to a semblance of honor with a draw at the (very last) minute.
Match report: Tunisia vs. Saudia Arabia
Africa’s next match is the Group of Death encounter between Ivory Coast and the Netherlands. Let’s hope Drogba & Co. can pull off an upset!
Ghana lost 2-nil to Italy yesterday in the Mini-Group of Death’s opening match (the Czech Republic’s 3-nil win against the USA showed why it’s just the Mini-Group of Death, and not the real Group of Death). So three African teams have played, and all three have lost. There are just two opening games left for the continent to salvage some initial round-robin pride.
One of these games, unfortunately, is to be contested by Togo, later this afternoon, against South Korea. Togo currently don’t have a manager, and, being …
Following last night’s disappointing World Cup showing for Africa in the Group of Death - in which Ivory Coast pushed but couldn’t topple a better-organized Argentina - it’s a case of “Angola Expects” this evening, as the newcomer to the world football stage takes on its former colonial ruler, Portugal.
Needless to say, Angola haven’t been given much chance - Portugal are title contenders - but the Cup needs another surprise team to join Trinidad and Tobago, and the Palancas Negras, as Angola are known, are certainly eager to …
