Did you know? Brazil have never lost a match against an African side at the World Cup - in fact, our continent has never even collectively scored a single goal against the mighty champions, in four previous encounters.
That sterling Brazilian record’s set for some tarnish this afternoon in Dortmund, however, where the Black Stars of Ghana are the favorites to win the next Round of 16 match by several goals.
Preview: Ghana vs. Brazil
OK, so that second sentence was filed from Cloud Cuckoo Land - but it’s also true that if you believe something with …
According to reports, the entire Ghanaian World Cup team has been holed up in its hotel since the nation’s historic win over the USA last Thursday, having retained various African traditional healers to help them channel a host of world-beating spirits, ahead of their DVG clash with Brazil tomorrow.
In all likelihood, Tunisia will follow the majority of Africa’s World Cup teams today, and bow out of the competition. They face a tough opponent in the Ukraine this afternoon, but still have a slim chance of joining the round of 16. Here’s the scenario, courtesy Bob at WorldCupBlog:
Tunisia can advance to the round of 16 with a win over Ukraine if Saudi Arabia doesn’t beat Spain and if they finish with a superior goal difference (Tunisia currently -2, Saudi Arabia -4).
Hold on to your seats! Ghana and the USA will clash in just under four hours’ time - and their meeting will have a significant bearing on whether Africa will make it into the vaunted round of sixteen.
The G-Men (a.k.a. Black Stars) need to either beat or draw with the Americans, and, while that is happening, Italy must beat or draw with the Czech Repulic. It’s also possible for Ghana to advance if both they and the Czechs win - in fact, there are a slew of possibilities. Here’s the full scenario, …
In a game that’s expected to attract a viewership in the upper hundreds, Africa’s once-brightest hope, Ivory Coast, will see their expedition to Germany come to a close, during tonight’s clash with lowly, but lowly, Serbia & Montenegro. Both teams are playing for a trophy called “pride”, which, apparently, doesn’t exist in three dimensions, unlike the one called “the FIFA World Cup winner’s trophy”.
If the Ivorians had done better, then the evening’s other match, Argentina vs. the Netherlands, would have had a bit more anticipatory juice. As it is, the once inducing-of-salivation …

In the end, Tunisia bowed out of the World Cup with a 1-nil loss to the Ukraine. This leaves Ghana to carry Africa’s hopes forward - against (gulp) Brazil this Tuesday.
Maybe the Black Stars can work some black magic during of the match…
Halala! Ghana beat the USA 2-1 this afternoon to accompany Italy, Group E winners, into the World Cup’s round of 16. It was an engaging match, with a very soft penalty-spot call by the referee giving Ghana the edge. All the goals came in the first half - the USA created a few score-tying chances in the second, but couldn’t convert them.

OK, first off the bat, apologies to the Iranians for using the term “Arab” to allude to a country that, as everyone knows, is full of Persians. It’s just that I needed a word beginning with “a”, and, well Persians aren’t all that far away from Arabs, in geographic terms - much in the same sense that Koreans aren’t all that far away from the Japanese. Right?
OK, painting myself into various obtuse corners here, but it’s all in good World Cup fun, and the point of this piece is really just to draw attention to the fact that …
Togo garnered some respect in their 2-nil defeat to Switzerland (who you can’t really see going very far beyond the round of 16, if they pip France to that post), while Tunisia blew a 1-nil lead during their game against Spain in the 70th minute, and ultimately suffered a 3-1 defeat.
So Togo are out, and Tunisia are teetering, their World Cup prospects hanging by the slender hope of a win against the Ukraine. It strikes me that, if Ghana blow their (surprisingly good) chances of getting past …
