Brazilian Piper Set to Call SA Soccer Tune

You know the old saw - “He who pays the piper calls the tune.” This will hopefully not apply, however, to the next four years of South African soccer, which is about to welcome Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira into its hot-and-cold clutches, if various rumors swirling in the local media can be credited.

Reds De-throne Chiefs

In the end, Man U’s purchasing power prevailed over the Kaizer Chiefs’ pluck. South Africa’s Amakhosi dominated a somewhat lacklustre match, outfoxing their opponents with dazzling dribbling, and gamely playing by “English Prem” rules in the mosh-pit of a midfield - but for all their control of possession, they couldn’t score. The scoring was left to the Reds’ young revelation of a (borrowed, from Royal Antwerp) forward, Fangzhuo Dong, who chipped one in in the 85th minute, after an appalling Chiefs defensive error. The local side almost clawed one back in injury-time, hitting the post, but it was not to be. Man U have run rampant in SA, with what amounts to a B-minus side, proving that when it comes to luck in goalscoring, you can buy it.

SA World Cup Posse Burgled in Berlin

Proving to all skeptics that criminal acts are not just confined to the 1,227,200 square kilometers of African continent south of the Limpopo River, a group of burglars hit the German hotel rooms of SAA chief Khaya Ngqula and other South African VIPs during Sunday’s World Cup final.

Stars Aligned for Africa at World Cup

It has not failed to escape SA Logue’s notice that, in the world of sport, French-speakers are sitting pretty at the moment. Consider that in the past two days a French woman has won Wimbledon; a man who can converse with her as naturally as any compatriot - and whose mother is South African, incidentally - followed up her feat on center court; and, in the Tour de France, Sylvain Calzati, a Frenchman, won today’s gruelling stage.

That’s three out of four for the French speakers. But the biggest challenge is still to come: tonight’s World Cup match, in …

Green Point it Is! (If We Can Find the Cash!)

Cape Town’s Atlantic Seabord suburb of Green Point has been confirmed as the best spot for a 70,000-seat mega-stadium, which the city needs to build if it wishes to have any hope of hosting a semifinal match during the 2010 World Cup. The 9-hole Metropolitan Golf Course will not, however, have to make way when construction gets started. The city will instead build the new stadium on the site of the existing one - or may do, rather, if it can sort out the small matter of a R3-billion-and-change funding shortfall.

Map of Green Point

The stadium will cost around R4-billion, …

Crime Site Makes Everyone Go “Eeek”

SA Logue feels obliged to note the fact that, on the day of Germany’s World Cup handover to South Africa, the pressure on crackpots to cash in on 2010 is becoming almost unbearable, and many are starting to succumb.

They’re also unbearable, unfortunately - the crackpots, I mean. Consider the case of one Neil Watson. He has decided to grace our local blogosphere with the equivalent of a celebrity website for criminal acts. In what amounts to electronic vigilantism, he has made it his purpose in life to ambush the 2010 organizing team, the SA government, and fairly well anyone else who dares to consider South Africa in a positive light.
