more information on South Africa Cape Town
This series is especially for those coming to Cape Town, and planning on staying for longer than the average holiday, and would like to know in advance which area they wish to stay.
Hopefully I can answer some questions you might have about which suburb of Cape Town is best suited to your interests, age group and tolerance level.

Greenpoint:
As far as being central is concerned Greenpoint is perfectly situated between town and the Atlantic Seaboard, which gives convenient access to the Waterfront, and our most popular beaches: Clifton and Camps Bay. Town is but a 5-10 minute walk as is the Waterfront and transport in the way of minibus taxis are constantly zooming up and down the main road.
The Drakenstein Lion Park was recently brought to my attention as offering close contact with lions only 50km from CT.
5 minutes from Paarl (straight up the N1) the park is a sanctuary for captive bred lions that are unable to be reintroduced to the wild.
A number of opportunities exist for coming into close contact (but no touching), casual day trips, Volunteering and overnight tented accommodation within earshot of the blood curdling bellows.
Drakenstein Lion Park is privately funded and does not rear lions commercially for hunting or further captivity. You can also …

Wow, what a weekend!
On Sunday the street were a-hush as people regrouped themselves after Saturday night’s revelry.
South African’s all over the world are in a state of bliss and hopefully home sickness, watching our boks in green and gold scoop up not “just” the championship trophy, but player of the year and coach of the tournament also!
Bryan Habana’s 8 tournament tries is joint record with Jona Lomu. Dazzling the rugby world with his ridiculous speed.
The joy on the teams faces was a thing to behold and even Thabo Mbeki was smiling. There is …

I was always under the impression that one had to drive to Ceres to go skydiving, not so.
The Drop Zone has been operating for 10 years, just past Melkbosstrand (Milk Bush Beach), about 25 Minutes from Cape Town city centre. I am building up to doing in myself soon, if anyone would care to join in.

They offer numerous courses to get you going, including a spur of the moment tandem jump, which only requires 15 minutes instruction.
The Drop Zone operates 9 to 5, seven days a week, weather permitting. Check with Johnathan, 082 800 6290, before driving out.
Scheduled first jump courses are offered on Saturday mornings, by appointment only on other days. Casual and progressive jumping, Tandem skydiving and AFF courses are offered on all operating days.
See below for prices: (I am trying to arrange a discount for SAlogue readers, come back soon)

My heroine, Mayor Helen (of Troy) God-Zille, has been arrested this morning during a march against gangsterism and drugs.
“The question that arises is this: everyone knows who the drug dealers in Mitchell’s Plain are, and where they ply their trade why are they not arrested?” said the Zillmonster.
The childlike empress (Helen Zille) apparently knocked on the door of a suspected (known) drug dealer, which was “out of the spectrum of the march”. 8 persons including the honourable Zille were arrested for an illegal gathering outside the Mitchell Plein police station. “The last time I witnessed people treated in this way was during anti-apartheid protests. We now have a constitution and a Bill of Rights.”- Zillina.
A fantastic opportunity to spend a night on Table Mountain in comfort and wake up to jaw dropping views of the entire peninsula. (weather dependant:) With the recent spate of crime on Table Mountain, these portered and secure tours seem to be the way to go until the police round up the baddies.
This new “Table mountain trail” tour with Hoerikwaggo , is a 3 day mini-tour including Robben Island, the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, District six museums, Kirstenbosch gardens and culminating in a night’s luxury …

As a South African, and long time sufferer of cons, tricks, scams and so forth, I like to think of myself as at least a little streetwise. Well pride comes before a fall, and I would like to warn fellow Capetonians and anyone planning on driving our roads of a new fad in scallywagginess.
I was innocently driving home the other day when I saw a hot and bothered elderly man toting a briefcase along the R27 (West Coast Road). He was half heartedly hitching with his free hand, in an embarrassed manner. Of course I pulled over to help Oupa (Grandpa) out and he seemed very appreciative and indeed surprised that anyone would have stopped for him.

The Cango caves near Oudstshoorn are South Africa’s oldest tourist attraction.
Discovered (again) in 1780 and opened to the public in 1806, the Cango cave system is a winding network of jewelled caverns stretching well over 5km (so far discovered)
The first great chamber you enter is called the Van Zyl hall (named after the man said to have discovered them), is as long as a football field, with gorgeous dripping limestone formations.
There are two tours available to the general public and from where the “standard route” ends the “adventure tour” takes you a little further into the cave and through some tight squeezes some no more than 30cm high. The caves are a humid, warm and reasonable well lit. Take good walking shoes and dress lightly.
Some Cango caves mystery and intrigue:
When the pressures of crime, government and equal opportunity get you down, it is comforting to know you can go and smack someone with a pillow.
This flash mob event was filmed at the Victoria Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town. I expected to see the riot squad and special forces arrive to smack seven flavours of spit out of them, but it went down without hitch or reprimand it seems.
For a list of Cape Town Flash mob events you can see their Facebook group here. And you …

The Zulu Kingdom now offers visitors a chance to experience the Brew Route, similar in many ways to the wine routes of the Western Cape.
The Route consists of 8 breweries, which range from SABMiller (second largest brewer in the world) to the family run Farmers Brauhaus in Hattingspruit, Dundee.
The route takes tourists through a large part of the province and is impossible to complete in one day, but there is excellent accommodation available throughout the route, especially in the Midlands.
