Although the name spells doom, beautiful Shark Bay in Langebaan got its name from it’s numerous and harmless sand-sharks, not the greater and whiter variety.
Shark Bay is part of Langebaan lagoon, next to the West Coast National Park and is a quiet haven of shallow blue water, good fishing and fantastic kite surfing conditions.
If you like many visitors are planning on learning to kitesurf while you are here, there is no better place in South Africa to learn, with flat water, consistent wind and relatively warm water compared to the …
If you are planning on being in Cape Town this week, pack some foul weather gear, because something evil this way comes.
We have been extremely fortunate so far this winter, although quite chilly at times, the rain has mostly stayed away and we have had some gorgeous clear skies.
This week it is all changing apparently as a series of storms (4) are lining up to batter the cape all week long. Tonight’s storm looks to be nasty, but Thursdays is said to a “really big one”

We have been getting increasing reports of shark sightings around Noordhoek beach and Kommetjie. These reports are not coming from surfers or fisherman, but dedicated “Sharkspotters” who’s job it is to warn surfers and bathers to the presence of large toothy fish.

Cape Town has a few great spots to go for a horse ride if the mood takes you.
The two places I know are great are Noordhoek beach and Milnerton Equestrian School.
There are a few operators in Noordhoek village and they will take you on a glorious ride down kilometres of pristine beach at whatever pace you like. What I like about his is that on the beach there is no grass for the horsie to stop and eat. I am not an experienced rider, horsies know this and immediately reckon it’s lunch time.
Milnerton equestrian school is conveniently central (next to …

Yesterday, two girls from Chicago found the waters in False bay not as friendly as those of Lake Michigan.
The two set off from Muizenberg beach apparently to take photo’s in a store bought dinghy, barely big enough for the both of them. With only a dustpan tied to a broom as a paddle, the girls quickly found themselves in trouble. A friend on shore tried to rescue them, but with the rip current and offshore breeze he was unable to reach them on a surfboard.
The pair drifted as far as two miles out before being rescued by the NSRI. At …
It looks like we are in for a frosty winter. With snow in Soweto?!? and on the peaks in the Drakensberg and Ceres.
The nights in winter here can be chilly to say the least, and subzero temperatures are not uncommon.
The days however can be lovely, today being such an example! Crisp blue skies hardly a breath of wind (rare for CT) and a very respectable 18 Celsius. A perfect day for a surf.
A hallmark of the Cape Town winter is the arrival of the winter swell, which creates rideable waves at our best spots, which lay mostly dormant during the summer.
There are at least 50 surf spots within an hours drive of Cape Town, and many surf schools to show you the ropes if you don’t mind the famously cold water. (which does get a bit warmer in the winter)

More than 100 swimmers are expected to compete for R10000 ($1400) in a swim from Robben Island to Bloubergstrand (where I live). The 7.4km swim is considered to be one of the most difficult in the world, with strong currents, unpredictable swell, icy temperatures and of course sharks. This is known as the Cape of storms after all.
The race takes place on April 27th and a large turnout is expected as this is the 6th year of the event and a number of sponsored have gotten involved. The race began as a fund-raiser for the Vista Nova school, a school for children with learning disabilities and cerebral palsy and now the race has raised interest for around the world. The swimmers are certainly not in it for the money and the promoters hope this to become the largest event of its kind in the world.
Something that I am very close to trying out, is Ocean Kayaking or Sea Kayaking. I am trying to make my mind up whether I can justify buying my own kayak or if I should rent one for a couple of days to see if I like it. You can buy 1 or 2 seater’s and they can be kitted out to take fishing gear etc. This appeals to me greatly although, I imagine it could get quite hairy if I hooked into something weighing more than say 10kg. I bet there is a whole lot of technique involved that I may lose a few fingers learning. No pain no fish.
Elands Bay is about an 2 hour drive up the west coast from Cape Town and is a very sleepy town indeed. Famous for its left handed surf break which is a near mirror image of Supertubes in Jeffrey’s Bay. Elands or E-Bay is also a great place to see whales, west coast flowers and Khoi-san rock art.
