Noodlebosch noodelry in Long Street

Had a concerted walk down Long Street today, to check out the Backpackers and get some prices for Paragliding (dying to try it), it’s R850 ($120), but they only go on hot days with little wind…wind and Cape Town are good friends and not easily parted.

I am also toying with the idea of opening or buying an internet cafe, its a nice low maintenance operation that would suit my temperament quite well. There are not as many as I thought on Long Street, perhaps because the rentals are too high, but Sea Point is chock-a-block with them, at least 20.

First Flash mob hits Cape Town

A horde of 150 shoppers turned into a mob of pillow fighters at exactly 12:07 on Saturday at the V&A Waterfront. The fighters beat each other senseless for a minute, then collapsed before going their separate ways.

Onlookers amazement is the reward, the flash mob event is designed to confuse, bewilder and entertain. The event was arranged by Andrew Kerr and Brandon Matley who used the social networking site facebook to recruit and organise operatives. A fine job he did, imagine trying to get 150 twenty year old’s to be in one place at an exact time… I am just …

Budget airlines Booming! Mango, Kulula, 1time

Oh the wonders of semi-free enterprise! The emergence of competition to the state funded SAA, has sparked a price war that has changed the face of domestic flight pricing.

Budget Airlines Kulula, Mango and 1time are all doing amazing business and getting many more South Africans flying for the first time.

Until recently SAA dominated the market with a highly inefficient monopoly that forced prices to ridiculous levels. Even now they have to be subsidised by the government to survive.

Kalula airlines are revamping their entire fleet with the more efficient 737-400, hoping to drive prices down further. Kulula and …

Eskom’s “Scheduled” Power cuts last night, more to come.

According to capetalk radio last nights power cut (right in the middle of my evenings writing!), was scheduled and we were all told about it……. Not me!

Apparently more of these power cuts are due so the Homer Simpson’s over at Eskom to try and figure out how the “big glowy thing” works. I think we need to send our nuclear scientists over to Iran to “help” with uranium production and kill 2 birds with one stone.

Please Eskom, can you wait until after my writing has been saved?, or I am going to remove all my energy saving light bulbs, …

Reformed train surfers lead safety campaign

Train surfing has been a scourge in South Africa of late and hundreds of young black men have lost life and limb trying to impress girls, passengers and fellow train surfers.

Train surfing is the act of either riding the roof of the train, running along the walls of tunnels or hanging out the train while it is moving. It is a phenomenon also seen in countries like Brazil, where in many cases, bravado comes before brains.

Most of these kids have nothing to lose and so the ante gets upped until someone dies. Some reformed train surfers have now organised to …

More Stadium woes: World Cup 2010

As if bureaucrats could not slow down the building process enough, now it seems there are fears that the stadiums (Stadia?) might not be ready on time, due to skills and material shortages. South Africa has been facing shortages of cement and other materials for some time now due to the incredible amount of of building and apparent monopolization of the cement industry. The stadium building project has been classified a “high risk” project in light of the lack of resources.

Since the schedule has been delayed so much by endless council meetings, lobby groups and nail clipping, it looks as though we will have to import specialists and other skilled workers to complete the project on time. This then throws the budget out and the council meetings start up again. Woohoo

lotto Muti: The Magic Pen scam

Four men charged with selling fake “magic pens” have been fined R45000 after selling 2500 of them to unwitting victims paying up to R400 each ($50)

The pens being blessed with black magic and augmented with muti herbs, were sold on the pretext that job applications filled out with such would be successful. Competitions such as the lotto would also be a pushover for such a pen. 2500 people responded to newspaper ads to buy the pens and were shocked to find that they were not magic as promised.

The men revealed in court that the pens in fact had no supernatural …

New Dutch settler in the Cape Flats: Maduma

I read a lovely article today about Arnoldus de Veth, A 74 year old Dutch pensioner who has taken up residence with his new wife in the township of Gugulethu.

Gugulethu (Our Pride) lies in the Cape Flats and is a imposing expanse of shacks, bustling and cramped picture of poverty, community and South African culture. For a white person, let alone a Dutchman living in Gug’s is virtually unheard of. The townships have a reputation of crime and violence, but also warm hospitality and strong communal bonds.
