Ice Skating at Grand West Casino, Cape Town
It was Sarah’s Birthday this weekend so we decided to try and go to Ratanga Junction for some gut churning and bad pizza, but unfortunately it was closed due to the weather..(it was bright sunshine) This does not bode well for the future of Ratanga Junction, seeing as we are in the middle of school holidays right now.
If you plan on going do check the website here, from a weather forecast although they don’t seem to pay attention to it themselves.
Instead we decided to check out the new ice rink at the Grand West Casino centre. My wife was born on the 7/7/77 and not a great day to visit the casino if you expect to find parking! So it was very busy and all the parents had dumped their kids in the ice rink/movies/coat check so they could get down to losing some money fast!

Garden Route: Victoria Bay
The fantastic fishing spot we found on our trip to Wilderness was the Jetty at Victoria Bay, and what lovely little place it is too.

You often hear about Vic Bay in surfing circles as they have annual comp here, but this was the first time I had been. The surf break is a killer right hander with a lovely long ride. It breaks from the point so you can basically walk along the “little promenade” to the back line (short paddle out), what a pleasure.

Robyn: Why not Durban??
As I’m sure some of you have noticed this Logue is pretty one-sided, so to speak, in the favour of Cape Town. There is nothing wrong with that, but there are other beautiful parts of South Africa that are just as attractive.
Philip has asked me to help provide a balance and let the readers know what is hip, hot and happening in Durban or Durbs to the locals!

Du Toit’s Kloof Lodge: Good Cop Review
There is a lovely lodge just after the Huguenot tunnel on the N1, that I have always seen , but never stayed at until this weekend. With the advent of the tunnel it brings it too close to Cape Town, to be an overnight stop before heading North and I thought this may be the cause of it being so deserted of an evening…..but then we found out.
We went with friends, one of which has a penchant for giving bad news, so this will be a good cop / bad cop review. I will concentrate on the good stuff and then hand you over to Negeva to give you the not-so-nice. Should be ready tomorrow, seeping with blood and guts.

Wildlife at Sabie River Sun
Hippo’s only feed at night and can travel large distances in their search for enough short grass to fill them up. Every night at 6:30pm the wardens here open the gates to let the hippo’s out to graze on the fairways and also down to the Sabie river banks. There are 25 hippo’s in the lake and come out tentatively one by one and are only seperated from you by a single strand of electric wire and little pole which the daddy hippo would use as a toothpick. Out of the 25 I saw one baby hippo, about as big as a medium sized dog, scampering around trying to stay in his mommy’s shadow. Glad I did not bring my Jack Russel, Maxy, he would have been in there trying to play with it staright away.

Western Cape restaurants among the best in the world!
Since my last post was a bit of a damning treatise, here is a great bit of news for visiting gastronomes.
The S. Pellegrino 2007 list of “Best Restaurants in the world” was released last week and in the category for Africa and the Middle East, the top 5 were all in the Western Cape !! Eat that Ahmadinejad.
Le Quartier Francais (Franschhoek)
Bosman’s (Paarl)
Jardine (Cape Town central city)
Aubergine (Gardens)
Reuben’s (Franschhoek)
In the world rankings Le Quartier Francais came 47th and was SA’s only establishment in the top 100.

Wilderness Dunes resort: Garden Route
The view from this place is absolutely jaw dropping! The Chalet’s are built up on top of the dunes and overlook the entire horizon of the Indian ocean. The roar of the constant surf and salt in the air, makes you feel like your eating oysters all day…

Our chalet was very large with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and comfortably housed the 7 of us without feeling cramped in the slightest. We had 2 huge balconies, which were also quite private even though there was another chalet adjoining ours. We could have used another bathroom since there were only 2 guys and 5 girls…but under normal circumstances i.e: 10 guys, it would have been more than enough. The rooms are nicely done out, and feel like a beach house, funny that.

Skyways; Gecko Lodge rainforest canopy “foofy slide”
Yesterday , we got up early and had booked at the skyways treetop ride above the rainforest canopy. It is run from the Gecko Lodge on the Sabie Road in Hazyview, and take groups of up to 8 up to the top of hill by Land Rover and then you chicane down or what we call in South Africa a “Foofy Slide”. I don’t know how it got that name, but it is quite ubiquitous here. The forest is lush and thickly wooded with indigenous trees, which is quite rare for the area, as SAPPI ((South African Paper Product Incorporated) guess) has planted thin pine almost everwhere for use in the countries toilet paper etc.

Sabie River Sun: Hazyview, Mapumalanga
We have now left the Kruger park lodge and are staying in the Sabi River Sun, a very lush and sweeping country club with a famous 18 hole golf course. (I don’t own any closed shoes so I don’t think they will let me play) our chalet in in the most picturesque setting on the banks of a huge hippo and croc filled lake on the edge of the course. The sounds of the hippos grunting is a nice reminder of where you are. The hippo’s are fenced in by a 1 foot high wooden beam and a single strand of electric wire… surely any self respecting 4 ton hippo could trounce that fence and be on our porch licketysplit. Seemingly they are happy wallowing in the water all day and at night sections of the fence are opened to allow the to go and feed by the banks of the Sabie, not sure why they would come back by morning, but they do. No satelite television out of the resort probably.
