Please send in your own PYO tips, too!

The phenomenon that is summer fruit in Cape Town – when truckloads of mangoes, berries, grapes and other seasonal fruits are carted to stores and outdoor markets, seemingly on the hour – is something that affords a good day’s frolic.

You can break your back grabbing strawberries by the fistful or strain your neck craning up into cherry trees – tongues and lips stained dark by juicy ripe fruit are guaranteed. Most PYO (“pick your own”) farms also have picnic facilities.

Learn how to share in nature’s bounty at this “berry” brilliant PYO site.

Mushroom picking after a night of good rain in Tokai forest can also be a blast. Be sure to get there early as in recent years a band of insomniac swiss-germans de-fungify the place before dawn. Be sure of the varieties you are looking for or you may no make your way home for numerous reasons!
