Further Insight & Opinion
Dive right in to Melissa’s, by all means, if you like scrumptious handmade deli goodies, by-the-kilo breakfasts and lunches (displayed in beautiful spreads), hot-cookie clientele with just a wee bit too much lame on the old cheekbones (or whatever that shiny/dripping-wet-look makeup is called), great coffee, and prices designed for plastic payment.
The Melissa’s chain of delis is a local phenom that’s gradually expanding to the rest of the country. The flagship store is on upper Kloof Street (and remains the best, I think), with others dotted around the greater peninsula. The coffee is the chief attraction of the place, for me, because it’s so damn good - but foodies will delight in the many “finger foods” you can pinch to take home, from almond nougat to chilli oil.
One rule to bear in mind: don’t go to Melissa’s before 1:30 p.m., or you’ll have to share the space with the upper-class suburban ghouls who descend to feast just before their facials and waxes. (This rule doesn’t apply, of course, if you’re a misanthrope or urban sociologist.)

Funny the people who post here. Do you come for the coffee and food or do you just care to complain and comment about others in your sane socio-economic status? Wake up and enjoy the coffee. You could always go to Amigo’s up the street with the best views of Table Mountain.
