Just a stroll down the road from the Olive Station cafe, Empire Books makes for a pleasant half-hour’s peruse. The selection of SA poetry and fiction is above-average, while the ratio of good literature to rubbish is positively life-affirming.
My last visit there saw the proprietor unpacking a large consignment of old liquor boxes stuffed with interesting titles - always a good sign in a bookshop. But beware his friend, whom he calls “the Bard of Muizenberg”, and who sits in a corner and mercilessly unleashes terrible puns as you browse.
