Cape Town Power Outage: Tonight’s Rugby “Guaranteed”

The Super 14 match to be played in Cape Town this evening - between the city’s own Stormers and the Otago Highlanders from New Zealand - has been “guaranteed” lights from the various people who can make that kind of claim. Power officials have said they’ll schedule the Newlands-Claremont blackouts so that they don’t coincide with game time, and stadium officials have assured rugby fans that their backup generators could launch the space shuttle.

In the event of a blackout, the match will pause briefly, while the generators kick in and the lights power up again, and then the hammer-and-tonging will continue.

Given the success of New Zealand’s teams in the competition to date, doubtless sections of the Stormers’ faithful are hoping that the guarantees will prove false.
