Lower Sabie, Kruger National Park: Camp Review

SA Logue brings you the lowdown on the camps of the Kruger National Park. See our Kruger Camps tag for more.

Lower Sabie Camp

Where is it? On the banks of the Sabie River, where the park’s southern hills become its southern plains, dominated by acacia and marula trees.

How large is it? Large - just under the size of über camps like Satara and Skukuza.

What price range? The camp is large enough for all budgets, featuring levels of accommodation from camping plots to luxury lodges.

What kind of facilities does it provide? Accommodation, day and night drives, bush walks, cafeteria, shop, pool, petrol station.

Official website (map, pictures of the accommodation, booking, etc.): Lower Sabie.

Camp notes: Lower Sabie is an older camp, and so the facilities are a bit worn. My stays there have always been marked by much waving away of wasps. The river is beautiful - be sure to book a perimeter hut near it - and the game viewing in the surrounding veld is excellent. The stay won’t be as comfortable as at, say Skukuza, but

What you might see getting and staying there: There’s a good chance of seeing the full Big Five during a stay of two nights or more. The Sabie River attracts an excellent range of birdlife, and there is a terrific birdhide, the Ntandanyathi hide, on one of its tributaries.
